Gene Smith, the Ohio State University athletic director, was paid a bonus of $18,000 because Logan Stieber won the 141-pound weight class at the NCAA wrestling championships. Stieber got a pat on the back.
Smith’s contract calls for a bonus for “exceptional athletic achievements.”
It is past time to pay the athletes a percentage of all sports income. For starters divide among “student-athletes” 10% of ticket and concession sales. And a performance bonus equal to any given to athletic directors and coaches–after all who does the performing?
